Freshman Hannah P. was recently awarded the Bowie HS Student
of the Month award.
She was awarded by the administration at Bowie H.S for being
an exceptional student.
Freshman Hannah Porter won the Student of the Month award
for the month of April.
“I think I won student of the month because I can balance
sports and academics well,” freshman Hannah Porter said.
Porter was not expecting to be awarded the Student of the
Month award this month
“ I felt surprised when they announced it on the
announcements,” Porter said.
Many excellent students are nominees for Student of the
Month each month, and according to Principal Stephen Kane, the process of
choosing just one is very difficult.
“So many students at Bowie are excelling at such a high
rate, it’s very hard to choose only one student,” Kane said.
Biology teacher David Jones shares his advice with us on
becoming a student of the month.
“ I think it helps a lot to participate in class and get to
know the teachers well, along with getting good grades. But, it is also
important to not focus completely on grades, but to do sports and activities
outside of school as well, because that is what’s going to make a student stand
out,” Jones said.
Porter also shared what qualities a Student of the Month
should have.
“ I think they should be respectful and involved in school,”
Porter said.
Counselor Nancy Davis shares her opinion on teacher’s
involvement on the Student of the Month awards.
“ I think it is good for kids to have a healthy relationship
with their teachers, and have students be positively influenced by teachers and
staff because I think it pushes the kids to work harder. Healthy relationships
with teachers can come in handy for things like recommendations and college
applications, so I think its always a good thing to have,” Davis stated.
Porter shared her influencers for Student of the Month.
“My track coach and teachers helped,” Porter said
Porter shares her advice with students who want to or plan
on becoming student of the month in the future.
“ Don’t stress too much, but still try your best. Also, don’t
focus on just grades. Keep them up, but try and have a good balance,” Porter
said.
When asked if she wanted to become student of the month
again, Porter responded with no.
“I want someone else to have a chance to be Student of the
Month,” Porter stated.
The Student of the Month for May will be officially chosen
on April 30th.
